and as much as vash wants to keep the people he cares for close to him, it's much the same on his end; arm's length might sometimes be too close when he takes his brother into consideration, when he thinks of how he might use something or someone to reel him in, hurt him in turn, he knows it would be better to keep more acquaintances than friends.
part of the job, that's all it is. he can't let himself think that he wants some kind of closeness, because that makes it real, and nobody needs that.
it doesn't matter if it's just drinking.
which is why he doesn't reply, instead heading to where he'd last seen him, assuming he's still there if he's still drinking and dropping into a seat next to him. all easy smiles and a hum of laughter in the back of his throat as he settles. )
